The second step is making repairs to your roof. This varies depending on what type of material your roof consists of. If you have shingles, use a sealant to patch up any cracks or holes that may be present in them. If you have tiles on your roof, replace any broken ones with new ones that match the existing color scheme as closely as possible. For metal roofs, use a sheet metal patch over any hole or crack that has formed over time. Then use masking tape to block off any areas that should not be covered by sealant; this includes windows and other openings such as exhaust fans. Next, use a putty knife to scrape away any old sealants or caulk from previous applications. Finally, if necessary, use caulk to fill in any holes or cracks in your roof before applying the new sealant.    

Now it’s time for the main event—applying the actual sealant! For best results, wait until there is no rain in the forecast for at least 48 hours after application. To apply the sealant, first use an extension pole with a roller attachment (or just a paint roller) to spread it evenly across your roof’s surface in one direction only—this will help ensure that it adheres properly without creating bubbles or uneven patches. Allow plenty of time for drying between coats; typically two coats should be sufficient but check manufacturer instructions for exact drying times). Once everything is dry and set according to manufacturer instructions, carefully remove all masking tape from openings such as windows and exhaust fans.     

5. Replace any missing or damaged shingles.

Fortunately, replacing damaged shingles is a relatively simple task that most homeowners can do themselves with the right tools and supplies.

You will need replacement shingles (in the same color and style as the existing ones), a pry bar, a hammer, roofing nails, and roof cement. If you are not sure what type of shingle you need, take one of the undamaged ones to your local home improvement store for comparison. It’s important to make sure that you get exactly the same type so that it matches up with the rest of your roof. 

Once you have all of your supplies ready to go, it’s time to start removing any existing damaged or missing shingles. Use your pry bar to lift up on the surrounding shingles until they come loose from the roof deck beneath them; then set them aside in a safe place where they won’t be lost or blown away by windy weather conditions. Make sure that all nails are removed carefully so that they don’t cause any damage to other parts of your roof while being removed.                 

Once all of the old shingle pieces are removed, it’s time to remove any remaining nails from the area where you will be installing the new one(s). Use your pry bar to remove any nails still left behind from the original installation; then clean up any debris in order for everything to fit together nicely when installing new ones.

6. Install metal flashing around your chimney and vents.

Start by placing one piece of metal flashing along the top edge of your chimney or vent opening. Then place the second piece below it so that there is an inch or two overlap on either side. Secure both pieces with galvanized nails or screws (depending on what type of material you are using). Make sure that all nails/screws are driven in securely so they won’t come loose over time due to weather or vibration from wind or air conditioners running nearby. 

Once both pieces of metal flashing are installed and secure, caulk along all edges where there is an overlap between them. This will help keep moisture out and prevent rusting over time due to exposure from rain or snowfall.
